The Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its 108th annual meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 26.
The 108th annual meeting of the Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. tomorrow, Jan. 26.
The celebration will be held at Grand Victoria's Fox River Room, 250 S. Grove. The cost per person is $40; there is free parking in the parking deck.
The event opens with a networking reception followed by a buffet lunch at noon. The program includes a video presentation that will showcase the successes of 2015. David Sam, president of Elgin Community College and chamber board chair, will provide a glimpse of the business and economic successes planned for 2016. The presentation will end by 1:15 p.m.
During the meeting, the chamber will also recognize retiring, new and continuing board members.
The chamber was founded on July 31, 1908, as the Commercial Club. With 47 founding members, the focus of the group was to attract industry to Elgin. The club changed its name in 1920 to Elgin Association of Commerce. When the Great Depression hit, the association was a major factor in attracting industry to Elgin to employ the city's citizens.
Through the ups and downs of the economy, the association -- later known as the Chamber of Commerce -- has continued to promote Elgin and its businesses and provide networking opportunities to its members.
