The City of Elgin, Illinois Human Relations Commission met on Dec. 1.
After reviewing and approving the Nov. 3 meeting minutes, the commission heard the Diversity Committee update. Also under old business, the commission heard and discussed updates on the MLK Committee and Black Lives Matter.
After reviewing the 2016 meeting schedule, the meeting was adjourned.
The Human Relations Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month. The seven members of the commission are appointed to three-year terms by the Elgin City Council.
The commission sponsors public events to encourage harmony among the diverse residents of Elgin. It also offers community education programs and assists residents in learning their rights to housing and employment. The commission's duties include investigating discrimination complaints. It also advises city officials, staff and other boards and commissions on issues regarding prejudice or discrimination and offers appropriate actions to correct the problems.
Residents of Elgin who feel that discrimination has occurred in employment, housing or public accommodation within the city of Elgin should file a complaint with the Human Relations Commission. Complain forms are on the city website at http://www.cityofelgin.org/index.aspx?nid=394.
