Prospect Heights, Illinois Police Chief Jamie Dunne will take over as Chief of Police in Wheeling, Illinois on Jan. 4

Prospect Heights Deputy Chief Al Steffen will take Dunne's place as Chief of Police on the same day.

After nearly five years as Prospect Heights' top cop, Chief Dunne is moving on to the Village of Wheeling Police Department. He replaces Chief Bill Benson, who is retiring after 30 years with the Wheeling Police Department.

Mayor Nicholas J. Helmer thanked Dunne for his outstanding service as police chief and wished him the best of luck in his new position at the Nov. 23 City Council meeting. Before being hired as the Chief of Police, Dunne worked for the Buffalo Grove Police Department. After 30 years with that department and working his way up to Deputy Chief, he took the Police Chief position in Prospect Heights in February 2011.

Steffen has been with the police department for 25 years, since it was formed in 1990. Sergeant Jim Zawlocki will then move up to the Deputy Chief's position. Zawlocki was Prospect Heights' 2015 Officer of the Year.
