The City of Elgin, Illinois Human Relations Commission announces schedule of events for the annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration.
The weekend of January 16, 17 and 18 will be filled with activities celebrating the life of the great Civil Rights leader, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Events begin on January 16 with the annual prayer breakfast at ECC from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. A public program will be held at the Hemmens Cultural Center at 4 p.m. on January 17.
Monday, January 18 events include the youth day of service from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Centre. Elgin students and youth groups are invited to participate and share their service experience as they are recognized for their accomplishments. Registrations will close when 300 confirmed participants register or on January 8. Participants and groups can find the application on the city website. In addition to the youth event, a food drive will be held at 9 a.m.
Other Elgin opportunities that honor the life and memory of Martin Luther King, Jr. include scholarships for high school seniors and the 2016 MLK Humanitarian award. The scholarship applications are due by December 4, while nomination forms for the Humanitarian Award are due by December. 17.
Vendors are invited to exhibit at during the Saturday and Sunday events. The application and table fees are due by January 9.
