The Illinois Department of Transportation compiled and released the 2007 to 2013 analysis of crashes at Rte. 58 and US Rte. 12 in Des Plaines, Illinois.
Traffic cameras were installed at the intersection of Rte. 58 (Golf Road) and US Rte. 12 (Rand Road) on October 27, 2010. Since that time, accidents have generally decreased at the intersection. Accidents occurring while turning, however, have increased.
The accident totals for all approaches in 2007, 2008 and 2009 were 24, 20 and 11, respectively. After the camera installation, the total accidents in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 were 13, 14, five and 20, respectively. This is a decrease of 29.07 percent.
On the east and westbound approaches, where the cameras were installed, in 2007 there were 12 accidents, while in 2008 and 2009 there were seven and eight, respectively. In contrast, in 2010 there were five, in 2011 there were six, in 2012 there were 4 and in 2013 there were eight accidents. The total number of crashes were reduced by 33.3 percent after photo enforcement began.
Rear end, angle and other types of crashes, including bicycles and sideswipes, all showed decreases. Turning accidents, however, increased by 33.25 percent on all approaches to the intersection, but were reduced on the photo enforced east and westbound approaches by 28.7 percent.
