The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded more than $48 million in affordable-housing grants to Illinois state and local governments, U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren (R-Dist. 14) said on Monday.
The grants include Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG), HOME and Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) funds for 2016.
Kane and Will Counties in Hultgren's district will receive nearly $5 million out of the total.
“Colder months are ahead in Illinois and the 14th District, and I’m pleased at the additional assistance provided to our neighbors most in need this next year,” Hultgren said. “I trust our state and local officials will use this funding efficiently and responsibly to ensure the ‘least of these’ in our communities are served well.”
CDBG awards grants to develop housing in urban neighborhoods while expanding economic opportunities. ESG is focused on getting homeless individuals and families off the streets by increasing and improving emergency shelters, finding housing for shelter residents, and assisting families and individuals before they become homeless. Local housing programs are assisted by the HOME program, which works to increase affordable housing with grants to state and local governments. Local and state governments and nonprofits turn to HOPWA for assistance in providing housing and other support services for low-income HIV/AIDS patients and their families.
