Nicor Gas is modernizing the Northbrook natural gas system.
Nicor Gas, or the contractor, will contact Northbrook residents soon to inspect their sewer connections if they are not accessible from the street, and to locate existing natural gas lines and meters. Other utility lines -- such as electric, cable and water -- also will be located and marked with spray paint and gray flags. Residents are asked to remove any obstructions so Nicor Gas can access the gas lines and mark sprinkler systems.
When a Nicor Gas employee or contractor knocks at the door, residents can ask to see the worker's Nicor Gas or AGL Resources ID card to ensure the worker is legitimate. Every worker carries this ID. If the person does not have an ID, do not let them in.
The new gas meter will be placed outside, and the gas line moved. While the work is in progress, the gas will be turned off for approximately three hours. The gas may be off longer at multi-family residences with more than one meter.
All landscaping and paving affected by the improvements will be restored to its original condition. In some cases, temporary measures will be taken until the work is completed.
