Deb Paul, a student from Port Barrington, Illinois, is completing her student teaching assignment as part of the Special Education program at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. She is serving at Cotton Creek Elementary School in the D118 school district for the spring 2026 semester.
Paul is one of 156 UW-Whitewater students placed in schools throughout the region starting in January. Student teaching marks the final step before candidates receive their degree and license. This semester, UW-Whitewater has partnered with 191 cooperating teachers across 118 schools in 71 districts.
Student teachers work alongside cooperating teachers on lesson planning, instruction, and assessment. Thirty-three teacher candidates from UW-Whitewater were hired by school districts as interns under the Department of Public Instruction’s Wisconsin Improvement Program (WIP). These interns are licensed to teach up to half of each day independently and receive a stipend for their work.
UW-Whitewater licenses more teachers than any other institution in Wisconsin. The university was founded in 1868 with a mission focused on educating teachers. More information about its College of Education and Professional Studies can be found at uww.edu/coeps.
