The Village of Skokie has announced ongoing efforts to safeguard the rights of all residents in response to federal immigration enforcement activities in the Chicago area. The issue will be discussed at the upcoming Village Board meeting on Monday, November 3, at 7:30 p.m. at Skokie Village Hall.
Village staff are currently reviewing ways to strengthen existing policies and protections for residents and businesses. Recommendations will be presented to the Board. Additionally, an internal protocol is being developed for employees to report potential Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or Customs and Border Protection (CBP) activity on Village property.
Recent actions include the distribution of an immigrant rights and resources flyer created by the Human Relations Commission, which has been shared with schools, houses of worship, and nonprofit organizations. A dedicated webpage has also been launched to provide information about immigrant rights and resources.
The Village has engaged with stakeholders, residents, and affected community members to better understand their needs and offer support services.
Residents seeking assistance can access several resources such as:
- The Village of Skokie Human Relations Commission’s Protecting Your Rights flyer
- The Protecting Your Rights webpage (available in multiple languages)
- Illinois Immigration Information Hub
- Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR), phone: 312-332-7360
- North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic, phone: 847-737-4042
- Resurrection Project – Immigration Legal Services, phone: 312-666-1323
For emergencies or to report ICE activity, individuals can call the ICIRR Family Support Hotline at 1-855-435-7693. Additional support is available through Skokie Health and Human Services at 847-933-8252.
The Village maintains its commitment to the Illinois TRUST Act. This law prevents local law enforcement from participating in federal immigration operations or detaining people based only on citizenship or immigration status unless there is a valid criminal warrant. The Human Relations Ordinance further supports this stance by restricting access to village facilities for immigration enforcement purposes. Residents who are concerned about any law enforcement activity are encouraged to contact the Skokie Police Department by dialing 911.
“The Village of Skokie values inclusion, dignity and respect for all, and is committed to providing safe access to Village services and protecting the rights of all who live in our community.”
“The Village of Skokie is a welcoming community, committed to serving all who call Skokie home. The Village recognizes the uncertainty and fear many are experiencing at this time, and reaffirms that Skokie is a place where everyone is valued and respected. The Village calls on all community members to embody Skokie’s welcoming spirit and continue showing compassion, respect and support for one another.”
