ILLINOIS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 54: Morrison Statement on Arroyo Arrest

By Press release submission | Nov 1, 2019

Illinois State House District 54 issued the following announcement on Oct. 29

Yesterday, State Representative Luis Arroyo (D-Chicago) was arrested on a public corruption charge. Arroyo was charged with allegedly agreeing to pay a state senator $2,500 a month in bribes in exchange for the senator’s support on legislation involving video gambling sweepstakes games that would benefit his lobbying clients.

In light of the recent news, State Representative Tom Morrison (R-Palatine) released the following statement:

“For far too long, a culture of corruption has pervaded Springfield, bringing an untold cost—not only to Illinois’ reputation, but to taxpayers. At a time when our state faces insurmountable financial challenges, it makes me take pause when legislators use their offices to enrich themselves and their cronies—through alleged bribery and questionable public policy.

I would like to thank the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Department of Justice for their ongoing investigation into the corrupt practices of Illinois’ ruling class.”

There has been a bipartisan call for Rep. Arroyo’s resignation. On Monday, House Republican Leader Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs) invoked House Rule 91, which would form an official investigative committee into the allegations against Representative Arroyo.
