City of Elgin issued the following announcement on Oct. 18.
The City has learned that ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) conducted an operation in Elgin today.
The Elgin Police Department had no involvement in the action.
Whenever ICE becomes a topic of conversation in our community, it’s important to clarify agency roles.
- Federal authorities enforce immigration laws, not the Elgin Police Department.
- Elgin police officers do not ask people about their immigration status during routine investigations and encounters, including traffic stops.
- The Elgin Police Department has no plans to enter into an agreement with the federal government to deputize officers to enforce immigration laws.
