ARLINGTON HEIGHTS PARK DISTRICT: Name Change to Indoor Swim Center Reflects Broader Recreation Commitment

Park 10

Arlington Heights Park District issued the following announcement on July 3.

Arlington Heights Park District – a leader in park and recreation management locally and nationally– announced officially today that it has changed the name of its former Olympic Indoor Swim Center to Arlington Ridge Center. The name change reflects the new building’s broader recreation commitment and its goals of shaping the future of multi-generational recreation options in the area.

In November 2018, residents were invited to submit their ideas for renaming the new building and the park. “A public naming contest just seemed right,” said Brian Meyer, Director of Recreation and Facilities at the Arlington Heights Park District. “This renovation of the Olympic Indoor Swim Center came to fruition because of the support from our neighbors so it only seemed fitting that we asked our residents – adults and children alike – to be creative and clever in renaming the park and building.”

Name submissions were accompanied by a short description explaining how the new name reflected the evolution of the new facility, its new amenities and purpose. All entries were evaluated by an internal employee committee and the Park Board of Commissioners unanimously selected Arlington Ridge Center for the building and Legacy Park to replace the current Olympic Park name. "The new name – Arlington Ridge Center – is a nod to the name of the residential sub-division that surrounds the park and that was established in the 1950s. “The new name allows us to positively impact the way people of all ages in the area access affordable athletics, aquatics, and fitness options to improve their quality of life.” said Brian Meyer, Director of Recreation and Facilities. “As a building with its roots in aquatics, we are committed to delivering affordable fun, and fitness services that will help connect residents beyond quality swimming, but activities in the fitness and athletics areas, and more."

"Results from our most recent Community Needs Assessment revealed that our residents want to utilize state of the art fitness equipment to manage their health and to have fun at the same time," said Meyer. "To that end, we will continue to provide them with the facilities they need to better navigate their own fitness within the walls of the Arlington Heights Park District"

The new name is effective immediately, and will be implemented across the Districts marketing efforts throughout the remainder of the year. Membership information for the Arlington Ridge Center will be available in the upcoming Autumn 2019 program guide which arrives in homes on July 20. Asked about the name change, Interim Executive Director, Steve Scholten, shared that “This rebranding solidifies the commitment of the District to its residents’ overall health and well-being. Our Board really wanted folks to love this new facility, and inviting ideas from those who’ve grown up with the former indoor swim center was the least we could do as we prepare for the unveiling of the new building after undergoing a major expansion and renovation”.

The new building is scheduled to open in early 2020.

The new building will include a double-gymnasium featuring regulation high-school basketball courts, volleyball, pickleball and a second-floor indoor walking track, a 30-by-50-foot wellness pool, a fitness area, and multipurpose rooms. The new fitness area will include state-of-the-art equipment, featuring cardio and strength equipment from Precor and Tag Fitness, in an effort to provide a ‘one-stop’ fitness destination. An indoor walking track, and a separate space for stretching, group fitness classes, and personal training will round out the fitness center.
