CITY OF EVANSTON: 'Clean Up, Evanston!' April 27

City of Evanston issued the following announcement on April 5.

Community members are invited to participate in the City's annual Earth Day and Arbor Day community clean-up event, "Clean up, Evanston!," on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., at locations throughout the city.

In addition to the clean-up activities, the Evanston Ecology Center, 2024 McCormick Blvd., will host free, family-friendly Earth Day festivities, seed plantings, an indoor farmers' market, and outdoor nature play from 9 a.m. to noon. The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) will give away free oak saplings to the first 50 attendees. Attendees are encouraged to bring gently used items to donate to Cradles to Crayons.

Community members can also join Mayor Stephen Hagerty at the Clark Street Beach Bird Sanctuary, located at Clark Street and Sheridan Road, at 10 a.m. for a tree planting ceremony and proclamation celebrating "Natural Area Day."

Community groups and individuals of all ages can visit VolunteerEvanston.org or call/text 847-448-4311 to sign up to meet at any of these designated clean-up sites across the city:

Ladd Arboretum and Twiggs Park – Ecology Center, 2024 McCormick Blvd.
Fountain Square – Sherman Avenue at Davis Street
Chute Middle School – 1400 Oakton St.
Haven Middle School – 2417 Prairie Ave.
J.E.H. Education Center – 1500 McDaniel Ave.
King Arts School – 2424 Lake St.
Nichols Middle School – 800 Greenleaf St.

Community members who would like to clean up a park or public space that is not listed should select the "Self-organized park clean up" option on VolunteerEvanston. This option allows volunteers to clean up their neighborhood parks with support from the City. In VolunteerEvanston, volunteers should indicate which park they'd like to clean up and how many will be participating. Bags may then be picked up from the Ecology Center Wednesday, April 24 through Friday, April 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Saturday, April 27, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

In addition to the City's community clean-up event April 27, volunteers from civic organizations, social clubs, neighborhood associations, individual families, faith groups, school groups and employee groups are encouraged to participate in the City of Evanston Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department's year-round Adopt a Park program. The City is seeking volunteer groups to assist with litter pickup, preservation and maintenance of Evanston parks. This year’s "Clean Up, Evanston!" event is made possible through partnerships with Evanston/Skokie School District 65, ETHS District 202, Northwestern University, Canal Shores, Friends of the Chicago River, the Alliance for the Great Lakes, Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, Downtown Evanston, and Ridgeville Park District.
