Sen. Tom Rooney (R-Rolling Meadows) has Illinois students' best interest in mind.

Rooney closed out the spring legislative session assuring not one student credit is taken in vain with the passing of SJR76. The measure directs the Illinois Board of Higher Education (ISBOE) and the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) to equally classify general education core curriculum courses so they will transfer between institutions for full credit toward a baccalaureate degree.

“It’s a privilege to sponsor this resolution on behalf of the entire higher education working group,” Rooney said.

He said the resolution is “one of the moving pieces” lawmakers are pushing through to ensure that residents get a solid education in the state.

“This is going to help all of us who have had complaints from folks who have gone to community colleges and tried to transfer to four-year universities ... [and] found [that] some of their credits haven’t transferred,” Rooney said.

Sen. Paul Schimpf (R-Waterloo) said the message should be loud and clear that if credits do not transfer lawmakers will simply pass more bills to make sure it happens.

SJR76 passed unanimously and is now with Gov. Bruce Rauner for consideration.
