Johnny Veliotis, In Memoriam
Whereas Almighty God in His infinite wisdom has called Johnny Veliotis from our midst, and
Whereas Johnny Veliotis was the loving husband of Janet, and
Whereas Johnny Veliotis was the dear father of Alex, Peter and the late John Jr, and
Whereas Johnny Veliotis moved to Bridgeport at the age of 11 and attended Armour School and then Tilden and Kelly High Schools, and
Whereas, at the age of 12, Johnny Veliotis began selling hot dogs from a push cart in front of Spiegel’s and Comiskey Park, and
Whereas, in 1970, Johnny Veliotis founded the legendary Johnny O’s hot dog and Italian beef stand on 35th and Morgan which has been featured on many television food programs over the years for its excellent sandwiches and its famous “Mother in Law” tamale, and
Whereas Johnny Veliotis was an original member of the South Loop Chamber of Commerce and was honored by the Chamber in 2011 for his support and dedication to the Bridgeport neighborhood, and
Whereas Johnny Veliotis was a member of the Hamburg Club and the Old Neighborhood Italian American Club, and
Whereas Johnny Veliotis was known as a generous supporter of local causes and youth sports teams, and
Whereas Johnny Veliotis was also a respected singer who once was asked to perform the National Anthem at Comiskey Park; and
Whereas all who knew him will attest that Johnny Veliotis was a kind and compassionate man, virtuous of character and gentle in spirit, admired and respected by his many friends and neighbors, and dearly loved by his family, now therefore
Be It Resolved by the Board of Commissioners of Cook County that the Board does hereby offer its deepest condolences and most heartfelt sympathy to the family and many friends of Johnny Veliotis, and joins them in sorrow at this time of loss, and

Honoring Michael E. Williams on the Occasion of his Retirement from the Winnetka Police Department
Whereas, Michael E. Williams retired from the Winnetka Police Department on September 15, 2017 after twenty years as a law enforcement officer; and
Whereas, Michael E. Williams began his career as a law enforcement officer with the Winnetka Police Department on September 08, 1997; and
Whereas, Michael E. Williams became a Firearms Instructor in 1999 and subsequently a Master Firearms Instructor in 2006; and
Whereas, Michael E. Williams completed crash investigation courses at the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety in 2005; and
Whereas, Michael E. Williams became a Motorcycle Officer in 2007; and
Whereas, Michael E. Williams served as an investigator on the North Regional Major Crash Assistance Team from 2008 until 2014; and
Whereas, during his career, Michael E. Williams served as a Field Training Officer for new recruits, provided use of force and firearms training to dozens of officers over the course of his career and was recognized by his superiors and the citizens he served, receiving numerous Honorable Mentions and letters of appreciation from citizens; and
Whereas, Michael E. Williams served his department and community with distinction, and the people of Cook County owe him a debt of gratitude for his service.
Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved, that the Board of Commissioners of Cook County does hereby offer Michael E. Williams congratulations on his retirement and thanks him for his years of public service as a law enforcement officer; and
Be It Further Resolved, that a suitable copy of this Resolution be spread upon the official proceedings of this Honorable Body and that an official copy of same be tendered to Michael E. Williams.

Proposed Resolution
Honoring Lemonaid for its Commitment to Fundraise for Charities While Remembering 9/11
Whereas, River Forest residents on the 700 block of Bonnie Brae wanted to do something positive to commemorate the first anniversary of 9/11; and
Whereas, in addition to honoring the day, this small group of residents wanted to encourage kids to get involved; and
Whereas, since kids have expertise in all things lemonade, the group decided to raise funds through a lemonade stand, forming LemonAid with the motto “Kids Helping Kids”; and
Whereas, after raising $400 that first year selling lemonade and homemade treats, LemonAid has gone on to raise more than $220,000; and
Whereas, keeping true to its motto, LemonAid’s fundraising beneficiaries have included Hephzibah Children’s Association, the Oak Park-River Forest Food Pantry, Parents Allied with Children, Teachers for Tomorrow, Shriners Hospital for Children, and Maywood Fine Arts, to name a few; and
Whereas, this year, the 16th Annual LemonAid will be held on the 700 block of Bonnie Brae on September 11th from 3:00-7:00 and will include lemonade, popcorn, baked goods, and live entertainment; and
Whereas, a drive-through donation lane will also be available to drivers on Chicago Avenue at Bonnie Brae; and
Whereas, this year’s proceeds will benefit Kidz Express, a south Austin-based initiative in which older adolescents who have grown up in the program are hired as junior mentors to model good behavior and tutor younger participants after school and during the summer.
Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners does hereby recognize and honor LemonAid for its dedication to raising money for those in need.
Be It Further Resolved, that a suitable copy of this resolution be tendered to LemonAid to encourage its commitment to serving the community of River Forest and beyond.

George Bannos, In Memoriam
Whereas, on August 8, 2017, Almighty God in His infinite wisdom called George G. Bannos from our midst; and
Whereas, George Bannos was the beloved husband of Patty (nee Pitsis); and
Whereas, George Bannos was the loving father of Andrew and Alexis; dear brother of Jimmy (Annamarie); son of the late Gus and Catherine (nee Malevitis); and uncle and great-uncle of many; and
Whereas, George Bannos along with his brother and partner Jimmy were instrumental in popularizing Cajun and Creole food in Chicago featured in their Heaven on Seven restaurants; and
Whereas, George and Jimmy Bannos became business partners in 1980 when they opened new Garland Coffee Shop in the Loop and later changed it to the renowned New Orleans-focused spot; and
Whereas, George Bannos comes from a long line of restaurateurs, including his parents and both sets of grandparents; and
Whereas, George Bannos’ legacy also continues on with his nephew Jimmy Jr.’s acclaimed Purple Pig Restaurant; and
Whereas, George Bannos enjoyed running the front-of-the-house of Heaven on Seven where his absence will be deeply missed.
Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners does hereby offer its deepest condolences and most heartfelt sympathy to the family of George Bannos; and

Proposed Resolution
In Recognition of the 20th Annual Chicago Football Classic
Whereas, twenty years ago local businessmen, Mr. Everett Rand, Mr. Tim Rand and Mr. Larry Huggins desired to empower African-American youth to not only complete high school, but also to promote the benefits of attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU); and
Whereas, these men created the Chicago Football Classic, an annual battle between HBCU powerhouses held at Soldier Field; and
Whereas, additional activities will include a President’s Reception, an Official CFC Golf Outing, a Pep Rally in Daley Plaza, an HBCU College Fair and Empowerment Summit, a High School Battle of the Bands, an HBCU Battle of the Bands, a tailgate party, various alumni events, and a Vendor Marketplace; and
Whereas, each year the proceeds from this event fund scholarships for local students as well as for students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities; and
Whereas, the 20th Annual Chicago Football Classic - featuring the Grambling State University Tigers and the Clark Atlanta University Panthers - will be held on September 30, 2017; and
Whereas, Grambling State University is located in Grambling, Louisiana. Grambling was founded by a group of farmers, the Louisiana Colored Agriculture Relief Association, in rural north Louisiana who wanted to educate others African-Americans in their region. Their school, ‘The Colored Industrial and Agricultural School’ opened its doors in November 1901. The school would be renamed Grambling State University in 1974; and
Whereas, Clark Atlanta University is located in Atlanta, Georgia. Clark was formed by the 1988 consolidation of Clark College, a four-year undergraduate institution, and Atlanta University, which only offered graduate degrees. In 1957, these two schools joined forces with Morehouse College, Morris Brown College, Spelman College, and Gammon Theological Seminary to create the Atlanta University Center Consortium. Clark Atlanta remains a member of the consortium to this day; and
Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved, that the President and the Cook County Board of Commissioners, on the behalf of the residents of Cook County, do hereby recognize September 30, 2017, as “Chicago Football Classic Day” throughout Cook County; and
Be It Further Resolved that a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the organizers of the Chicago Football Classic.

Proposed Resolution
Honoring the Life of Reverend Tyrone Crider
Whereas, on Friday, May 26th, almighty God in His infinite wisdom has called one of our community and religious leaders, Rev Tyrone Crider, to His side; and
Whereas, Rev. Crider was born on January 6, 1959, in Maywood, Illinois, to Charles and Bernice Crider; and
Whereas, Rev. Crider attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, where he accepted the call to ministry, preached his first sermon and became a licensed preacher on May 17, 1978. He would later be ordained on March 1st, 1981; and
Whereas, after graduating from Morehouse in 1982, Rev. Crider moved back to Chicago to head the National PUSH for Excellence Program; and
Whereas, in 1983 Rev. Crider coordinated the youth voter registration campaign to elect Harold Washington as Chicago’s first African-American mayor; and
Whereas, in 1984 Rev. Crider led the national voter registration campaign for Rev. Jesse Jackson’s Presidential campaign; and
Whereas, Rev. Crider served as the Director of Admissions and Associate Dean of Students at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, from 1985 through 1989; and
Whereas, Rev. Crider organized the New Hope Community Baptist Church of Chicago in 1991. He served as its Pastor until March of 1998; and
Whereas, Rev. Crider was installed as Pastor of Mount Calvary Baptist Church of Chicago in July of 2003 and served Thirteen (13) years, ten months (10) in that position; and
Whereas, Rev. Crider published The Gospel Tribune from 1994 to 2013, and launched the African-American Tribune in 2014; and
Whereas, Rev. Crider is survived by his wife Regina and their four children: Sandra, Shantoya, Tyrone Jr., Ti’Ana and one grand-daughter, Felice.
Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved, that the President and the Cook County Board of Commissioners, on behalf of the residents of Cook County, extend their deepest condolences and most heartfelt sympathy to the family, as well as to the many friends and loved ones of Rev. Tyrone Crider; and
Now, Therefore, Be It Further Resolved, that a suitable copy of this resolution be tendered to the loved ones of Rev. Tyrone Crider as a means of communicating our deep respect for Rev. Tyrone Crider’s lasting legacy as a pillar of our community.

Whereas, Constantine “Gus” Alpogianis was the beloved husband of the Evangeline (nee Mastropulos); and
Whereas, Constantine “Gus” Alpogianis was the devoted father George (Sophia), Maria and Manolis Alpogianis; and
Whereas, Constantine “Gus” Alpogianis was the loving grandfather Evangeline, Costa, Kyriaki “Kiki”, Maria and Anna; and
Whereas, Constantine was the cherished brother of Evelyn (the late Peter) Leberis and the late Mike (Betty) Alpogianis; and
Whereas, Constantine was the cherished brother-in-law of Evelyn (Nick) Kostantinidis and Georgia Mastropulos; and

Manufacturing Awareness and Appreciation Month, October 2017
Whereas, Cook County in partnership with the counties of DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, and Will and the City of Chicago, the Chicago Metro Metal Consortium, was designated an ‘Investing in Manufacturing Communities Partnership’ Manufacturing Community by the United States Department of Commerce in June, 2014 and re-designated in September 2016 for an additional two-year term; and
Whereas, Northeast Illinois is a leading manufacturing center whose metal manufacturers generate more than $25 billion in annual revenues and act as a driver of regional economic development; and
Whereas, more than 4,000 fabricated metal and machinery manufacturing firms located in the metro Chicago area provide well-paying manufacturing jobs for over 110,000 employees and contribute to broad-based prosperity; and
Whereas, Cook County in partnership with the Chicago Metro Metal Consortium are collaborating with manufacturers, educational institutions and workforce providers, nonprofits, trade associations, and economic development organizations to support and strengthen the region’s manufacturing sector; and
Whereas, the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), the Manufacturing Institute (MI), and the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) have designated October 6, 2017 as National Manufacturing Day and October as Manufacturing Awareness and Appreciation month; and
Whereas, manufacturers, educational institutions, and other organizations in Cook County will be hosting events on October 6 and throughout the month of October to showcase the high-skilled and well-paying jobs afforded by a career in manufacturing, to support and promote a positive public image of manufacturing, and to ensure the continued growth of the manufacturing industry; and
Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners does hereby proclaim October, 2017 as Manufacturing Awareness and Appreciation Month in Cook County, Illinois and urge all residents to join in recognizing the important role of manufacturing in our county.
