Latest issue of 'The Resources Journal' is available online
The Prospect Heights, Illinois Natural Resources Commission (PHNRC) has published the November issue of The Resources Journal.
In the issue, now available online, Gov. Bruce Rauner proclaimed October as Oak Awareness Month in Illinois. In celebration, Commissioners Peter Hahn and Dana Sievertson planted 30 one-year-old seedlings at Prospect Heights Slough. The seedlings were generously donated by resident John Kamysz, who has been collecting acorns from his family's property in Wisconsin.
"I was happy to see that the Commission was willing to plant and reestablish these wonderful native oaks," Kamysz said.
The seed collecting efforts of the PHNRC has tripled the number of seeds collected since August. More than 70 species of native plants were collected. The seeds will be sowed at the Prospect Heights Slough on November 22 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and on December 6 at ComEd Bike Path Prairie.
The Resources Journal also reported on the Hey and Associates ecological report on the Prospect Heights Slough and Hillcrest Lake and the ensuing plan to implement the recommendations. In addition, Commissioner Marcia Jendreas has earned the Master Naturalist Certification from the University of Illinois and Peter Hahn has joined PHNRC as a new commissioner.
