EVANSTON – On June 30, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), a Chief Deputy Whip and Ranking Member of the Innovation, Data, and Commerce Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, released the following statement after the United States Supreme Court overturned President Joe Biden’s plan to provide millions of Americans with debt relief:

“I am deeply disappointed by the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down President Joe Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan. As a former teacher, I understand the importance and value of education, and I believe that college should be affordable for all Americans. This reckless decision by the rogue, extremist justices means that tens of millions of Americans will remain burdened with debt, forced to choose between defaulting and putting food on the table. Further, this decision only sets us back as we try to remain competitive in the industrialized world. We must make higher education affordable for all.

“The fact is that President Biden’s debt relief plan is completely legal under the HEROES Act, and the decision to overturn it is the result of a corrupt, right-wing majority on the Supreme Court that is working against the wishes of the American people. More than half of Americans, believe that President Biden’s student debt relief plan is necessary.

“While this decision is unjust and incorrect, it does not mean the end of student loan forgiveness. The Higher Education Act provides the Secretary of Education with a broad toolbox that can be used to deliver relief to millions of student loan borrowers despite the Supreme Court’s decision, but we must work to ensure that these tools are utilized. In Congress, I will continue to do whatever I can to increase federal resources to make college more affordable and guarantee student loan forgiveness. The time to act is now.”
