State Representative Brad Stephens urged drivers on April 8 to stay attentive behind the wheel as part of Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The annual observance aims to highlight the risks of inattentive driving and promote safer road habits.

The campaign comes as Illinois continues to see serious consequences from distracted driving. In 2024, crashes involving at least one distracted driver resulted in the deaths of 51 people across the state. Each statistic represents a family and community affected by preventable loss, making distracted driving a significant public safety concern.

“Distracted driving is fatal,” said Rep. Stephens. “Let this Distracted Driving Awareness Month be a reminder to keep your eyes on the road and your focus where it belongs.”

Law enforcement agencies are increasing their efforts throughout April to address this issue. According to a news report, the Illinois Department of Transportation is partnering with state police and local authorities for heightened enforcement against behaviors such as texting, social media use, and video viewing while driving.

Stephens has represented Illinois’ 20th House District since his election in 2019, following Michael P. McAuliffe according to Ballotpedia.

The broader effort reflects growing concern about traffic safety statewide, with officials emphasizing that even small distractions can have tragic outcomes.
