Mark Albers, president of the Niles Township Republicans, said requiring voter identification helps ensure that votes are legitimate and elections are secure. He made that statement to North Cook News.

The topic of voter ID requirements has gained attention as lawmakers consider new legislation. The SAVE America Act is a Republican-backed election bill that would require Americans to show documentary proof of U.S. citizenship—such as a passport, birth certificate, or other qualifying ID—when registering to vote in federal elections. It also mandates photo ID to cast a ballot and directs states to verify voter citizenship and remove non-citizens from voter rolls. CBS reported that Pew Research Center polls show that around 83% of Americans support voter ID requirements.

Albers said, “Protecting the core of our democracy starts with safeguarding our elections… Requiring voter ID is a crucial step to make certain every ballot counts… We owe it to ourselves and our communities to ensure elections are fair and trustworthy… Standing behind measures like this is defending every vote and securing democracy for years to come,” according to North Cook News.

Polling data shows broad support across the U.S. for requiring photo ID to vote. Support crossed party lines: about 95% of Republicans and roughly 71% of Democrats favor voter ID laws. The breakdown by race likewise showed strong majorities in favor, including approximately 85% of White, 82% of Latino, and 76% of Black respondents. Enter reported that the issue is not sharply divided along partisan or racial lines according to CNN correspondent Harry Enten.

Albers is a resident of Morton Grove, Illinois, who was appointed as the Niles Township GOP organization’s president early in 2024. He has also recently run for Illinois House seat #15. Albers is committed to boosting Republican voter turnout in Niles Township, growing the township’s Republican membership, and communicating the Republican positions on issues that matter to Niles Township voters according to his campaign website.
