Sudden cardiac arrest remains a significant public health concern, with more than 350,000 incidents occurring outside hospitals each year in the United States. According to the American Heart Association, “Sudden cardiac arrest occurs without warning or within minutes after symptoms appear. More than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of the hospital each year. The location of the out of hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) most often occurs in homes/residences (73.4%) followed by public settings (16.3%), and nursing homes (10.3%). If performed immediately, CPR can double or triple the chance of survival from an out of hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). The 2023 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics state that among the over 356,000 OHCA that occurred, 40.2% receive bystander CPR.” (American Heart Association).

The Hanover Park Fire Department is working with the American Heart Association to provide training on lifesaving skills for those who may witness a cardiac arrest event.

For 2026, all scheduled classes will focus on Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS). Additional courses such as Heartsaver AED, Stop the Bleed, and First Aid are available for groups upon request by contacting the Hanover Park Fire Department at (630) 823-5800.

Fees for these programs vary: Healthcare Provider BLS costs $65 per person regardless of residency status; Heartsaver/AED and First Aid are $30 for residents and $50 for non-residents; Stop the Bleed classes are offered free of charge.

More information about these programs can be found in the Hanover Park 2026 CPR Program Brochure.
