District 64 marked Music In Our Schools Month in March with a series of performances and festivals that showcased the talents and progress of its instrumental music students. Throughout the month, band and orchestra students took part in events designed to highlight their dedication, growth, and musical skills.
The Band Progress Concerts at Maine South High School were among the highlights. These concerts allowed students from fifth grade through high school to perform on stage for families and community members, demonstrating their development over time. The performances reflected the hard work invested by both students and directors during rehearsals and lessons.
Another significant event was the Orchestra Solo & Ensemble Festival, which brought together more than 400 orchestra students from across District 64. Over 200 performances took place in ten different rooms, each evaluated by experienced judges who provided written and verbal feedback to help support student growth. Many of these performances featured professional accompanists, giving participants valuable experience collaborating with other musicians.
Lincoln Middle School’s Symphonic Band also participated in the Northern Illinois Music Conference Festival this month. The ensemble received a Division I rating—the highest possible—after performing for a panel of music educators who offered ratings as well as clinics aimed at further developing ensemble skills.
According to District 64 officials, these events underscore the value of instrumental music education by fostering perseverance, creativity, collaboration, and confidence among students. The district expressed appreciation for its band and orchestra directors—Mrs. Ballinger, Ms. Briggs, Mrs. Faulhaber Mr. Hellermann, Mrs. Hutter, Mr. Rybak, Mr Teater and Mr. Yoon—for their commitment to supporting student musicians.
