The Buffalo Grove Village Board has passed new regulations for e-bicycles and e-scooters aimed at improving safety and clarifying usage rules for residents. The Park District is set to consider a similar ordinance at its upcoming December 15 board meeting, which would align regulations across public spaces in the area.

According to the new rules, e-scooters that can exceed 10 miles per hour are not allowed on public sidewalks, bike paths, parks, or parking lots. These faster scooters may only be used on streets by individuals who are at least 18 years old and must follow standard traffic laws.

For e-bikes, riding on sidewalks is prohibited. Only Class 1 e-bikes—which offer pedal assistance without throttle—are permitted on bike paths and in parks. On roadways, both Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes can be operated by riders of any age, while Class 3 models require riders to be at least 16 years old. All users must adhere to traffic rules when operating these vehicles.

Additionally, non-highway vehicles such as ATVs, dirt bikes, and golf carts remain banned from all public streets, sidewalks, and paths.

Residents are encouraged to review the full details about where and how various e-mobility devices can be used by visiting www.vbg.org/ridesafe. The Village and Park District plan joint efforts in education and outreach to inform community members about these local regulations.

“Working together, we can help promote safe riding habits as we adapt to this new, popular form of mobility,” stated village officials.
