Skokie has announced that alternate-side parking will be enforced following an overnight snowfall of about 4.25 inches. The parking rule will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, December 7, and Monday, December 8.

On Sunday, vehicles must be parked on the side of the street with odd-numbered addresses during enforcement hours. On Monday, vehicles should be moved to the side with even-numbered addresses between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Some streets in Skokie are exempt from alternate-side parking rules on weekends and holidays. A list of these streets is available through the Village.

The Village stated that plows “will continue to do their best to avoid any leaf piles that remain in the street,” and leaf collection will continue as weather allows over the next week.

To alert residents when alternate-side parking is required, emergency sirens sound at 7 a.m.

For those needing temporary parking options during this period, the Village permits use of select municipal lots:
– North Skokie Swift lot accessed off Gross Point Road north of Dempster Street (in section closest to Gross Point Road)
– Municipal lot near Crafty Beaver on Oakton Street in Downtown Skokie
– Skokie Swift lot at Skokie Boulevard and Searle Parkway

Parking restrictions in these lots are suspended while alternate-side parking is active but resume after 6:01 p.m. on the last day of enforcement.

Snow removal operations are ongoing throughout Skokie. Major roads such as Church Street, Crawford Avenue, Golf Road, McCormick Boulevard, Old Orchard Road, Skokie Boulevard, Touhy Avenue, and sections of Oakton Street fall under state or county jurisdiction for snow clearance.

Sidewalk plowing occurs after four inches or more of snow have fallen; crews are currently working throughout residential areas. Alley plowing begins once six inches or more accumulate; updates can be found via the Village’s website.

Residents are reminded to clear snow from around refuse and recycling containers so crews can access them on collection days. Businesses must also keep areas around their containers clear for service.

Property owners should ensure walkways and sidewalks adjacent to their property remain free from snow and ice for safe passage by all pedestrians including children and people with disabilities. Businesses have a legal requirement to clear adjacent sidewalks as well.

For those who need help shoveling snow, TeenLink provides assistance connecting volunteers with residents who may have difficulty clearing sidewalks themselves.

Additional resources such as warming center locations and information about protecting against frozen pipes are available through Village communications.
