Charles Hutchinson, a candidate for the 18th District State representative, recently addressed the ongoing issue of corruption within Chicago's political scene. His comments were particularly timely, following the conviction of Ed Burke on December 21.

"Chicago aldermen convicted of corruption — and others facing charges," stated Hutchinson.

In his address, Hutchinson referred to House Minority Leader Tony McCombie's criticism of Illinois' weak ethics laws and her call for significant reforms.

"Illinois has weak ethics laws and House Republicans have been pushing for significant reforms for years," McCombie said in a statement. "Democrats’ complacency with the status quo continues to cheat and take advantage of Illinois families by the very government who says it is there to protect them. House Republicans have filed common sense proposals and are more than willing to have bipartisan discussions to close loopholes and enhance penalties for those who violate the public’s trust."

Ed Burke, the longest-serving City Council member in Chicago’s history, faced 14 counts and was found guilty on 13, including charges of racketeering, corrupt solicitation, use of an interstate facility for unlawful activity, and attempted extortion. The corruption schemes spanned the years 2016 to 2018, revealing HIS exploitation of political influence for personal gain. The case, which involved a “shakedown” centered around a Burger King, shed light on Burke’s efforts to manipulate his political standing for personal benefit. He is scheduled to be sentenced in June 2024 according to Fox 32 Chicago.

Hutchinson is a lawyer based in Wilmette who has been actively involved in community roles such as Chamber of Commerce President, Chairman of the Historic Preservation Commission, and a Wilmette Theatre Board member. His campaign website states that his candidacy is motivated by strengthening community ties and advocating crucial issues like parental rights, education, neighborhood safety, and tax reduction.

The incumbent State Representative Robyn Gabel (R-Evanston) holds the 18th District seat which includes north Cook County communities such as Evanston, Wilmette, Kenilworth, Northbrook, Northfield, Winnetka, and Glencoe.
