A noted taste of Japan is coming to Wheeling now that the village board has granted an application to a new restaurant.

Kenta Ikehata, the food master behind several Japanese restaurants in Chicago, has proposed a location for Chicago Ramen on Milwaukee Street in Wheeling for another branch of his successful restaurant, and many locals, including board members, are very excited about the new addition to the village.

“Everybody seems very excited about this,” Village President Pat Horcher said after the go-ahead was given. “I'm pretty excited about it too.”

The restaurant should be opening early next year. It will be located at 743 N. Milwaukee Ave., taking over the site of a former Subway restaurant.

Ikehata also applied for a Restaurant and Retail Build Out Assistance grant from the village of Wheeling. He is seeking a total of $49,481.50, which is a level of assistance that requires at least $100,000 of investment into the project. The grant program is designed to finance up to half the cost of improvements or renovations.

Ikehata was at the board meeting when his application was considered, and he thanked the board members for their consideration. He says the goal is to open the restaurant in February, but the exact opening will be dependent on how long it takes to finish renovations to the building.
