IDPH cautions parents to employ water safety techniques

Drain covers, diaper changing, disinfectants and dodging drowning are topmost on the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) list of priorities as it issues reminders for staying safe and healthy during the summer swimming season.

“Swimming is a great physical activity, and doing a quick check of the water can make sure it’s a healthy one as well,” IDPH Director Nirav Shah said. “While the Illinois Department of Public Health, along with several local health departments, inspects swimming pools, spas and water parks, doing a quick check of the water before you get in can help you avoid getting sick or being injured.”

Families are cautioned to remember basic hygiene standards for public water areas, from pools and water playgrounds to hot tubs. To avoid health problems, all swimmers should shower before entering pools and postpone swimming if they have diarrhea.

Parents need to provide bathroom breaks for children, change diapers in designated areas and remember that swimwear and diapers are not leak-proof -- and, if soiled, can contaminate the pool.

IDPH cautions families to remain vigilant and keep youngsters safe in the water; drowning is a leading cause of death for tots under the age of 4. It recommends teaching children to swim, providing life jackets, knowing CPR and ensuring that drains are securely covered to avoid accidents.

Additionally, swimmers can double-check facilities to ensure that they are licensed by the Health Department by accessing the Swimming Facility Search on IDPH’s website. The site also provides information about beach closings and advisories.
