Residents of Buffalo Grove are invited to attend the free Buffalo Grove Citizen Police Academy.
Taught by members of the police department, the classes cover subjects ranging from traffic enforcement to K-9 cops to SWAT team activities.
The academy is free, but enrollment is limited to 20. Attendees must be at least 21 years old. A background check will be run on each attendee before classes begin on March 30. The classes will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. on Wednesdays for eight weeks. Applications are available online and at the police station.
The Citizen Police Academy began in 1997. More than 300 Buffalo Grove citizens have participated in the classes, and some have gone on to become part of the Police Volunteer program. While the academy is not mandatory for police volunteers, the department recruits from academy participants. Police volunteers assist the department by filing, transporting court documents and assisting at parades and special events. By taking on a variety of necessary and time-consuming tasks, the volunteers free up the officers' time so they can better serve the Buffalo Grove community.
