ComEd Prairie and Slough plans are on the agenda for tomorrow's meeting.

ComEd Prairie and Slough plans are on the agenda for tomorrow's meeting.

The City of Prospect Heights Natural Resources Commission (PHNRC) will meet at 7 p.m. tomorrow, March 10, in the City Hall Council Chambers, located at 8 N. Elmhurst Road.

After hearing reports and updates on the NRC Journal, programs, grants and the strategic plan, the commissioners will discuss the 2016 maintenance plans for Com Ed Prairie and the Slough.

The PHNRC plans to restore the prairie habitat along the four-mile bike trail and ComEd's right of way. Originally, this area was prairie, sloughs and creeks. Later, the land was plowed and farmed. The plan is to remove the turf grass, non-native and invasive plants, then replant with native seeds.

This adjustment will reduce maintenance by the city and ComEd employees, provide wildlife habitat and add a corridor linking the natural areas. In addition to the bike path and ComEd right of way, PHNRC plans to restore the habitat of the Slough by removing invasive species and seeding with native plants. PHNRC encourages volunteer involvement for both projects.

Throughout the year, the PHNRC holds volunteer work days from 9 a.m. to noon every other Sunday. The PHNRC provides all the tools and instructions. No experience is necessary; the PHNRC provides supervision. Volunteers can visit the PHNRC website to learn more about volunteering and to subscribe to the Resources Journal.

The commission will also discuss other upcoming projects, a ComEd grant and trainings before adjourning. The next meeting of the PHNRC is scheduled for April 14.
