The Elgin Fire Department Recognition Ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. today, Feb. 16, in the Heritage Ballroom at the Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony Way.

Elgin Fire Chief John Fahy will present the Elgin Fire Department Chief's Appreciation Award and the Elgin Fire Department Citizens Life Saving Award to citizens. The recipients of the awards have made outstanding contributions to the fire department's mission.

The first annual "Phoenix" award will be awarded to fire companies that successfully revived a patient that was in full cardio-respiratory arrest and subsequently went home from the hospital. Department members will also be recognized with a unit citation for their above-and-beyond performance at emergency and non-emergency scenes.

The 27 fire department members who served in the U.S. military will be honored in a special presentation during the ceremony.

The Elgin Fire Department protects an area of approximately 39 square miles, which is occupied by more than 108,000 people. The 133 firefighters provide coverage to the city, Illinois' largest gaming facility and the main transportation routes that pass through Elgin.
