Chicago's Museum of Broadcast Communications' Jim Engel will give a free talk on golden age of children's television in Chicago.

The "Garfield Goose and Friends" show, hosted by Wilmette resident Frazier Thomas, is just one of the Golden Age children's shows featured in the free talk at the Wilmette Historical Museum.

Pop culture historian Jim Engel of Chicago's Museum of Broadcast Communications will give an illustrated lecture at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 31. The historical museum is located at 609 Ridge Road in Wilmette.

Engel has enjoyed a 40-year career as a cartoonist, designer and pop culture historian. He is the children's TV curator at the Museum of Broadcast Communications. During his career, he illustrated products, designed toys and illustrated comic books for a variety of well-known clients, including Disney, DC Comics, Burger King and McDonald's. He appeared on WGN Radio with Dave Hoekstra in 2015 to talk about the 60th anniversary of Garfield Goose and Friends.

The long-running show premiered at 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 29, 1952. Using a combination of silent cartoons, Encyclopedia Britannica films, stories and songs, the show received high marks from critic Jack Mabley. The premier show included an Our Gang silent, "Buried Treasure," with narration by Thomas.

The original puppets are on display at the Museum of Broadcast Communications.
