Olde Schaumburg Centre Commission to meet, review variation for Waterbury rowhomes

M/I Homes to request approval for a vinyl cedar shake product at upcoming OSCC meeting.

M/I Homes to request approval for a vinyl cedar shake product at upcoming OSCC meeting.

The Olde Schaumburg Centre Commission (OSCC) will hear M/I Homes of Chicago LLC's request for a variation on the siding for the Waterbury PUD homes at 7 p.m. tomorrow, Jan. 21.

The village board approved the Waterbury rowhomes in November.

The approved design used Hardie Board cement board siding for the decorative cedar shake sections of the exterior. Since the approval, M/I Homes has located a similar vinyl product with a better visual appearance. The product, Cedar Discovery – Perfection Shingle Double 7in, has a more realistic texture with random gaps and a deep shadow line consistent with real cedar shakes.

Previous variation requests for vinyl lap siding have been denied by the OSCC, due to the poor appearance of the vinyl products. After reviewing the new product, staff agreed that the product has a better appearance than the approved cement board product.

Due to the high quality of the product, it is not setting a precedent that would allow vinyl siding in future variation requests. Staff is recommending that the OSCC approve the variation and allow this specific product to be used on the Waterbury rowhomes.
