Elgin's health board to review fourth quarter, year-end reports.
Board of Health inspectors will review the ways the organization has protected Elgin residents from improperly stored and prepared foods -- in addition to investigating other health code issues -- at an upcoming meeting.
Reports from the fourth quarter of 2015 and the year-end review of public health issues will be the focuses of the Elgin Board of Health meeting on Jan. 11. The Public Health Division investigates a variety of health code violations as well as inspecting restaurants, day care centers and swimming facilities.
During 2015, 851 sanitary inspections were conducted at the 409 food handling businesses in Elgin. There were 131 investigations of complaints and 14 investigations of food-borne illnesses.
High-risk businesses -- such as restaurants, grocery stores, nursing homes and catering businesses -- are inspected two or more times per year. Low-risk establishments, however, such as liquor stores and taverns are inspected annually. Businesses at moderate risk, such as fast food and convenience stores, are also inspected annually.
The Board of Health summary includes 122 inspections of public pool facilities, 28 inspections of day care centers and 12 inspections of barber shop and cosmetology businesses, massage and tattoo parlors. It also discusses the 45 scavenger trucks licensed in the past year.
After the board hears comments from the public and conducts any miscellaneous business, the meeting will be adjourned.
