Schakowsky calls for clean spending bill to avoid a government shutdown

U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) last week joined House representatives and public interest groups in support of a clean spending bill.

Rep. Schakowsky joined with more than 160 members of Congress, public interest groups and progressive organizations on November 19, and sent a letter to the House Leadership calling for a clean spending bill without divisive policy riders.

The letter urges the House leaders to avoid a standoff on the spending bill and reminds them of the disastrous 2013 government shutdown. The signers remain hopeful the Bipartisan Budget Act marks an end to budget deadlocks and that the Appropriations Committee will act in the best interests of the House and the nation in bringing forward an acceptable spending bill.

“With only eight legislative days remaining until our government shuts down, it’s time for Republicans to stop the games and pass a clean funding bill without any ‘riders’ whatsoever," Rep. Schakowsky said. "This means no partisan policy provisions that attack women’s reproductive rights, undermine the Affordable Care Act, are anti-labor, are anti-consumer, weaken environmental provisions, or any such toxic provisions that have nothing to do with funding our government. Today, I’m proud to stand with over 160 of my colleagues in a promise to vote against any legislation that contains such partisan provisions.

She called on Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI) to work with Democrats on the bill. "With such little time left, Speaker Ryan must stand up to the reckless voices in his conference and work with Democrats to pass a clean funding bill,” Schakowsky said.
