The Buffalo Grove Village Board said this week that it will terminate crossing-guard services for District 21 after Nov. 13 if the district does not pay its share of program costs for the entire fall semester.

The district has been disputing outstanding balances totaling $24,191 for crossing-guard services provided during the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 school years, so if has refused to pay for service this fall.

“The Village of Buffalo Grove has been transparent and clearly communicated the financial responsibilities of District 21 since January of 2013,” Village President Beverly Sussman said. “We have continually offered compromises and alternatives that have not been accepted by the district.”

If the district doesn't pay for this fall's services by the due date, current crossing-guard service for Longfellow, Tarkington and Kilmer schools will end.

The district's most recent response to the controversy came on Oct 15, when it voted unanimously against paying the outstanding bills.

Under the village's cost-sharing program, the district is required to pay half the cost of the crossing-guard program, while the village pays for all administrative and equipment costs.

Buffalo Grove officials said they are willing to extend service temporarily until winter break if the district would at least pay its share of fall semester costs in full.
